If you’re looking for personalized support after a cancer diagnosis, you may be wondering:

  • What integrative cancer nutrition actually means

  • How it differs from standard nutrition counseling

  • Whether it’s the right fit for you.

This FAQ answers common questions about my services, my approach, and how I work with clients at Mistletoe Nutrition and Wellness.

About Mistletoe Nutrition and Wellness

Why did you start Mistletoe Nutrition and Wellness?

To spread awareness about comprehensive cancer care. Nutrition, lifestyle, and environment matter greatly, and this is not spoken about in conventional settings.

If we don’t change the internal and external environment in which cancer was allowed to grow, we haven’t addressed key driving forces of cancer.

Who are you?

I’m an Oncology Nutrition Consultant (ONC) with specialized training in cancer and genetic analysis. I help cancer survivors at any stage after diagnosis to integrate changes to nutrition, lifestyle, and environment to reduce risk factors for cancer development and provide a more comprehensive approach to cancer care.

What exactly is “integrative cancer nutrition”?

Integrative cancer care affirms the value of conventional therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapies, while assessing the patient as a whole to address underlying health issues and risk factors, introduce appropriate natural therapies to complement the existing care plan, and personalize nutritional support.

This approach is focused on the internal and external environment of the patient as a whole, rather than being tumor-centric, and highlights the importance of diet, lifestyle, and eliminating environmental risk factors.

What’s Included in My Approach

Comprehensive care focuses on:

  • Elimination or reduction of risk factors that contributed to the diagnosis. Cancer doesn’t just happen, it develops.
  • Implementation of diet, lifestyle, and environmental changes based on treatment phase, cancer type, and personal health history.
  • Review of genetic variants affecting treatment efficacy and recurrence risk. (if client is interested in testing)
  • Presentation of research about complementary therapies that can improve outcomes.
  • High touch, ongoing support.
  • Support for recovery and rehabilitation after body and mind-altering treatments and medications.
  • Recommendations to reduce recurrence risk.

Working With Your Oncology Team

How do you work with my oncology team? Do you communicate with them?

I have worked both directly and indirectly with MDs and NDs. Some are receptive to the importance of nutritional therapy and are happy to collaborate about care plans over the phone, fax, or secure portal. Whether or not your doctor is receptive, they are always informed by you or by me about our work together and my recommendations, which are all backed by cited research.

If your doctor isn't available to collaborate, or you do not want to involve them directly, you'll upload your plan of care, relevant labs and test results to my HIPAA compliant software, so I am aware of all the details.

Can you help me prepare for treatment, not just manage symptoms during it?

Yes, improving your internal and external environment from day one helps with response to surgery and treatment. It is also important to assess genetic variants and consider complementary therapies while determining your plan of care.

How is working with you different from talking to the hospital dietitian?

I work with clients at any phase after a diagnosis, not just during treatment, because needs vary greatly during pre‑treatment, treatment, recovery, and remission.

A hospital dietitian is still a valuable part of care, and they do complete an assessment, track labs during treatment, and offer meal guidance. However, because of the hospital setting and limited length of appointments, their services are focused mostly on weight and symptom management.

My assessment and approach are more comprehensive, addressing existing health issues, reducing risk factors that contributed to the cancer's development, and emphasizing natural, integrative, and food‑based therapies before resorting to drugs for symptom management. By learning about your personal needs and preferences, and doing deeper assessments, I am able to create a highly personalized plan that extends beyond the time of treatment.

We have significantly more time together for initial intake, follow ups, and check ins. This means you get a deeper understanding of what you’re facing, the integrative options available to you, why we’re making specific changes, and how to adapt as your needs and life evolve. This type of high-touch support leaves no stone unturned, and helps healthy habits stick.

Who I Work With

What kinds of clients do you usually see at Mistletoe Nutrition and Wellness?

I work with clients diagnosed with all types of cancer, but due to my personal history with brain cancer, I am often sought out by those whose cancer diagnosis is rare or advanced.

Do you offer one-on-one sessions, programs, or both?

I offer one-on-one sessions for:

a) cancer nutrition counseling

b) genetic analysis (nutrigenomics)

For those who prefer DIY, I also offer a budget-friendly course — Basics of Anticancer Nutrition — as an in-depth, self-guided program.

Do you work with people locally, virtually, or both?

All one-on-one sessions are telehealth, so you can receive care from the comfort of your own home.

I periodically offer in-person workshops in the Portland, Oregon metro area.
