What’s an ONC and Why Do I Need One?
Apr 09, 2026Oncology Nutrition Consultants (ONCs) assess the "inner terrain" of a person diagnosed with cancer to improve bodily function, address factors influencing cancer risk, and improve response to conventional treatment with synergists in the form of food, herbs, and IV therapies.
During an Oncology Health Assessment, I review a client's diet, lifestyle, and environment for common instigators of cancer growth (Cancer Hallmarks), lab results, health histories, and identify dietary deficiencies, genetic factors, and toxic exposures.
Why Diet Matters
Cancer cells are creative. Normal cells create energy via aerobic respiration, but cancer cells create it via fermentation (the Warburg Effect); to support their immortality and increased growth.
This change in energy metabolism allows cancer cells to consume more than 20x the amount of glucose than normal cells, and create energy almost 100x faster.
Increased energy from glucose = increased cancer cell growth
Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet (SAD) is contributing significantly to this cancer process.
The SAD changed with the introduction of big agriculture and processed foods, and with that change came the insurgence of modern diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and Alzheimer's, all of which were rare to non-existent 300 hundreds ago.
The SAD has vilified fat, and leans heavily on simple carbohydrates, despite the fact that biologically, we do not need them in such high quantities.
All carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, sugar) become glucose in the digestive system. Eating a diet of mostly simple carbohydrates offers up a lot of excess glucose to be used by cancer cells for growth and spread.
What we eat is important, especially once diagnosed with cancer.
How a Healthy Diet, Lifestyle and Environmental Improves Outcomes
A diet of nutrient-dense foods with anti-cancer properties ensures the body has resources to repair damage and combat disease. This approach improves treatment response, reduces side effects and recurrence risk, and empowers patients to make informed dietary choices based on their needs and preferences.
Proper nutrition can help patients and survivors:
- Maintain strength and energy
- Better tolerate treatment-related side effects
- Support the immune system
- Improve recovery
- Mitigate recurrence risk
Oncology Nutrition addresses gaps in conventional cancer care and places the patient in the driver's seat through daily choices: diet and lifestyle.
By combining evidence-based recommendations with personalized care, I create a unique Nutrition and Lifestyle Protocol that supports your health needs and empowers your survivorship.
As an ONC, I act as researcher, advocate and compassionate guide to help you integrate these strategies and navigate care with confidence.
